Reaching

It is really over-reaching to try to imagine that which is anathema? Being in Cagayan de Oro City and trying to reach beyond that which is so obviously a blank wall is just like saying, "this is what life is all about". I cannot believe this is all there is about life. There are so many planets with moons on them orbiting like nothing is wrong, billions of stars and galaxies that whirl about space thinking of nothing but whirling. Is this what being alive is all about?

I have been stuck in Dumaguete for a long time and I wanted to get out of that rut into something which could be called mainstream. I had thought that Cagayan de Oro City would be such a place and for a while I seemed to be going someplace. These days I begin to discover that the image in my mind is far different from the image in other people's minds. I can see now that I need to rethink a lot of things.

It always appeared to me as though the universe in its vastness would have a place which I could call my own. In this planet, there is not a place for me.

These are good times. Even though I am still reeling from the bombardment that I received from the surrogate, I am still standing nonetheless and that is something good. I will prevail and even now, I can see little changes taking place. I have come to the realization that I should take more care when writing and I should organize my thoughts more and make my words come with ease and fluency. There is a lot to be done about writing and I can learn how to write effectively. I can learn, I can practice. I can observe and copy others who have succeeded and make my own creative style which is unique to me. I can do all these and maybe change my life in this way. Yes, this might be the big break I have always wanted. I will be more careful. This is the plan.

We do what we can to try and reach that goal that shines before us like a firefly or maybe it is nothing more than a will o' the wisp come to lead us astray. Do we get led astray? I think we do all the time and we do not even know or realize it until we are nearing middle age and we wonder if we have waste our time with the things that we have been doing.

It makes no difference if we appear to be successful and have everything that we could ever possibly want. There is going to be some kind of crisis when we stop and try to validate our lives.

Impossible to reach

I am an optimist, at least that is what I think. I think that people would take my thoughts and words and find good in them. This is easy to see when you see things in a balanced way but sadly, this is not the case at all because people always want to take advantage of others in order to assuage their egos and give them a feeling of self-worth. This constant search for advantage is actually a barrier to progress because it blinds them to opportunities that stare them in the face. If it does not give them an advantage then they will not take it even though it is fair and balanced. It always has to be stacked in their favor. This is how people are.

It pains me but I have to learn to take it in stride. I used to think that sulking and withdrawing into my own shell was a good way to deal with these situations with these kinds of people but I have changed somewhat and I take everything with a grain of salt and look for another way to get cooperation. Reaching out, like leaves reaching out to heaven, like the outstretched hands of a beggar on a dusty street, reaching out for pity or perhaps a little sympathy, forced into shamelessness by a lot unfit even for friendless dogs. A tortured soul reaching out for a hint of an understanding while standing confused and confounded, unable to sort out the feelings that jostle each other in his heart and gut. Reaching out for respite from a constant throbbing of an anguished heart unable to comprehend how such a feeling could ever exist in a world so wonderful and hopeful.

A single strand, a web reaching out to trap an unwary passer by, an insect, a fly, food to be trapped and wrapped in silky web too strong to resist. A tick with outstretched limbs reaching out to nowhere, waiting for a passing cow or buffalo or horse, a host for its next generation of parasites.

Or reaching for the Brass Ring or maybe just reaching for our dreams. We aspire to transcend our mundane, humdrum existence by reaching out to that which can only be seen by one who believes. Everyone says we are nothing but ordinary people but the reality of our existence refuses to accept this drab assessment of our beings. We want to be more and we let our imaginations soar where they are not ridiculed or belittled and simply be allowed free rein to be who we dare to be.

Like brave little seeds that soar on wings of the wind that bear them aloft, free to colonize and populate desolate places, our minds invent those nebulouos phantasms that are not there and make them real. Our minds reach out beyond the hard, concrete and steel reality of the Urban Jungle and fly up to the sky and be one with the clouds and the stars that dot the summer night sky.

Reaching out to someobody else; to reach out and be touched. This takes many forms. I guess one could equate reaching out to communication. We could very well consider communication as a means of reaching out to something or to someone. Meditation might also be seen as a method where one can reach out to one's internal self, or to the divinity within.

Communications is one of the fastest-growing industries. It has been so for centuries. The power of Rome was largely based on the system of roads that radiated from Rome and reaching all the way to its farthest outposts. A system of roads and outposts equipped with fresh horses enabled messengers to quickly bring reports and communications to the hub of power which was Rome. Various other means have been invented to facilitate the transmission of information including smoke signals, and a series of towers in France which could be freely seen and used to transmit signals from one tower to the other. From the time the telegraph was invented, man's capability to reach ever longer distances and his need for more efficient means of bringing information from one point to the other has never waned.

Wired and wireless, data and information must move back and forth from wherever to whomever reaching places which never could be reached before. It seems that the whole world is abuzz with all kinds of chatter pretty much like the human brain which constantly buzzes and lights up witht every thought fired up from a brain that never sleeps and never stops. Even when asleep, man's brain continues to function, reaching out, sending and receiving messages from neurons and synapses whose very reason for being is to communicate something.

Little wonder then that man re-creates what is happening inside him and brings it outside of him so he can communicate with others who are driven much like him by the need for information. The ever-increasing density of urban areas mimics the ever-increasing populace that inhabits Cyber Space. Chatrooms of all shapes and sizes, where topics of all descriptions are discussed. The internet was originally conceptualized and used to circulate scientific papers to scientists who could not be near physically. A tap on a key and a destination is reached very quickly even if that destination is halfway around the world.

Using their ingenuity and backed up by resources of Government and private enterprise, a simple system to deliver electronic messages was devised which eventually grew in complezity and capability to become the biggest system imaginable. Nothing significant can function without the Internet. Even personal diaries and photo albums are placed on websites for everyone to see. Everyone reaches out.

Very often we feel alone, isolated, unable to reach out to a sympathetic ear. This happens more often than we think and even as more and more ways are invented to bring us closer to one another, as technologies bring people closer to each other, there is still a big gap that exists not only between people but also inside a person. People get dichotomized by issues and ideas that pull at their hearts and minds and make them unable to find something that makes meaning without denigrating or defeating the other. One issue or idea might appeal to the heart while the mind or the intellect screams the opposite thus causing a big contradiction to exist within a person's psyche.

Very often we give our approval to something that we do not agree with just to buy a measure of peace. When someone pushes for his or her own agenda or point of view vigorously without regard to the consequences to other people and when they push so hard with such great pressure that they leave no alternative but to agree with them then they may have silenced real discussion and rammed their thoughts and ideas into another's throat. This happens more often than we imagine or know about. The loud and the vociferous will often succeed to shout down opposition to their thoughts and ideas and positions on any issue and many will agree with them not because they are right or that their positions are well-thought out but because they pursue their agenda very strongly.

When this situation happens in a family where one member lords it over the others and silence is bought at the expense of personal expression, then the feeling of isolation, of being a prisoner within one's mind, of being powerless to vent feelings and thoughts, increases and the avenue and ability to send signals for help becomes closed or diminished. This can bring about feelings of depression and helplessness. In today's world, even with the proliferation of communication gadgets or equipment like cell phones or radio, tv and the internet, many still fine it hard to find an ear who is willing to listen for a bit.

Our minds, never-ending thought machines that they are, often render us incapable to let any other thought in. This is the bane of modern life: too much information is being fed to people who are overloaded with information that they do not need. We are bombarded with so much information and data that may be good for marine biologists and experts in global warming or ornithologists but which we absolutely cannot relate to on a personal and day-to-day basis.. This increases the isolation in the midst of an information glut.

Pen pals

Before the adventt of the Internet a very popular way of reaching out to somebody unknown was to join a Pen Pal club, which is very much like the way it is done nowadays through the Internet. A more hopeful way perhaps was to stuff a message into a bottle and set it adrift in the ocean hoping it arrives in some unknown distant destination intact and its message read by sentient eyes. SETI or, Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence was set up to try and establish contact with intelligent life beyond our own Earth. It wisely uses mathematics as the language with which to send its signals since mathematics is precise and random signals can easily be discounted.

Sitting on top of roofs or a high place, many a people have scoured the skies for something, anything that will signify something more than the mundane existence they are having. There is something out there, this seems to be a common theme that reverberates in each human being's conscioiusness. Is it perhaps a hidden call seeded in our souls when we were first created? A very wise man once said: inherent in every man is the Longing for the Great. Do we perhaps feel empty even in the midst of plenty and surrounded by throngs until that hole within us is filled with meaning?

Why do we write poems, songs, novels? Is it to express that which gnaws at us inside and hope that it reaches kindred souls who empathize with the way that we feel and think?

Babies need touching

Inside the womb a baby feels the warmth of the mother's blood as it circulates its energy, bringing refreshing oxygen and nourishment to his own hungry cells and tissues that seem insatiably wanting for more; he feels the reasurring rhythm of her heartbeat beating in sync with his own. Closely held by in the mother's belly he feels himself a part of a world that is safe and complete. He needs nothing more and he stays for nine months before that great moment when he feels compelled to struggle and move and travel down to a new world, forced along by the contractions of his mother's muscles to the sound of the doctor's encouraging words; he makes his way amid much pain and agonizing moments to a world he has not seen before. The shock of sudden change in temperature has the doctor scrambling to clean him up and let him take his first breath and his first cry of shock or astonishment or victory perhaps as though to say,"watch out world, here I come".

Quickly wrapped in warm blankets he settles down to the warm embrace of his mother and he feels safe, secure, needed and loved once more. He is home and he knows it.

No man is an island complete unto himself, needing nothing and wanting no one. No such creature exists. Not even a hermit in a cave. Though he may seem to be completely alone and isolated from any other man, he nevertheles needs someone. He sits in silence stilling his mind, hoping that in his quiet solitude, the voice of his Beloved will speak to him in words that did not need to be spoken. He seeks to connect to the consciousness that he knows exists even if he has never tasted the sweet nectar that success in making that connection brings. In his isolation he seeks to feel the final embrace of his Beloved and free himself from the feeling of aloneness and isolation he felt even when surrounded by a throng of people that jostled him as he made his way to school or office in the city where he used to live. What is it about man that he would send signals to the vastness of space in the hope of getting a signal back no matter how faint or difficult to undestand? And to do so day after day without ever having tasted success even once.

He types out words in his computer to someone he doesn't know and he makes a connectioin. He reaches out to another in Cyber Space and the connection that they feel is as real as fingertips touching and electricity shooting through in that first touch when lovers find each other The wizardry of computer programming has been applied to bridge the gap between people separated by time and space, pretty much a continuation of the work of Samuel Morse who invented the code to send messages through the telegraph. Songs and music carry an artist's feelings through the air until they rest on a listener's ear conveying emotions to the heart without speaking .
